The Way to Do It

There is apparently some kind of tall-growing, yellow-flowered weed that thrives during drought conditions here in the Northwest. Two days of 100-plus degrees did nothing to wilt the squadron that sprouted across my lawn the last couple weeks. The writer in me observes these scrawny, uninvited guests scattered amidst the burnt, brown grass and thinks some editing is in order. I am, however, a little annoyed that there exists a plant as resilient and fecund as this. It seems that the one benefit of record heat ought to be that I am granted a hiatus from the ceaseless weeding and pruning my yard requires. Apparently, endlessly creative nature has other ideas.

As I drift down off the steps to begin this chore, I notice the fat boxwood shrub I’ve left untended for too long. I should just hire someone to shear it back, I think. I haven’t the proper tools or desire for that job. Then again, I realize, I could hire someone to do everything that needs doing in this yard. For the time being my cheapness wins out over my laziness and I squat down by the first weed.

I grab it too high on the stalk and snap it near its base. Rookie mistake. I get as low as I can on the next one, and it slides out easily. I’m surprised how short its root is. This plant’s commitment seems tenuous compared to the hardy dandelion. Now I’m working happily, having begun a dialogue in my mind about the personalities of weeds, shrubs, bushes, and trees while I refine my weeding technique. I believe I’m mastering this, and am quickly pleased with myself. It isn’t long before I’m searching for the next sprout with a hunter’s focus, until I look up eventually and see my yard is clear.

I take a moment to enjoy the satisfaction of a job complete, registering in my mind the difference between before and after, and how, yes, this is better. Better is better and I made it better. I glance again at the boxwood. Maybe I will hire someone for that. You can hire someone for anything that you want done more than want to do. You can even hire someone to write your stories. Can’t hire someone to lead your life, though, I think. That you have to do, and like absolutely anything, there’s only one good way to do it.
