Margaret George's
first novel, The Autobiography of Henry VIII, was meant to be
a "psycho-biography" of the enigmatic king rather than an apology or
a confession, but it turned out to be all three. Following that,
she’s stuck with characters that she feels the public
misunderstands—Mary Queen of Scots, Cleopatra, Mary Magdalene, Helen
of Troy, and now, Elizabeth I. Her novels have been translated into
nineteen languages and The Memoirs of Cleopatra was turned an
ABC mini-series.
